7 Train: 33rd Street - Rawson Street

Since moving back to Queens, I’ve been drawn towards photographing the 7 Train. As a result, I will be doing an ongoing series on the 7 Train (and possibly other Subway lines). This series will not be a Walker Evans type glimpse into the people who ride the line but rather a modified take at the structure itself. Of course, any work about the New York City Subway must mention Bruce Davidson’s amazing subway work.

I completely agree with the following Davidson quote: “If I am looking for a story at all, it is in my relationship to the subject – the story that tells me, rather than that I tell.” For the cityscape shots, I am hoping to capture the excellent juxtaposition of colors, graffitti, steel subway cars, and concrete tracks. For the portrait shots, I’m looking to capture the interplay between the subway setting and the individual. Hopefully, it will turn out well. This shot was taken at the 33rd Street Station on the 7 Train on the Manhattan side facing the westernmost part of the tracks. It was taken approximately twenty minutes after sunset. Data is below:
